Life: Vase With Fifteen Sunflowers |
|
Even van Gogh himself suggested that the image of Sunflowers belonged to him. To Theo he wrote: “the sunflower is mine in a way”. The amazing images he created have forever bonded him with the flower. Van Gogh created the Sunflower series in 1887 - 88. He created nine paintings all together for the series – three with fifteen flowers, two with twelve in 1888 and a year earlier had created a series of four paintings. One was given to Paul Gauguin. Created at a time in his career when he was experimenting with color and broadening his scope, van Gogh’s art was changing from a more somber color scheme into the vibrant and rich colors for which he is known. The paintings were interesting and innovative at the time for their use of yellows, especially a new pigment: chrome yellow. In March 1987 Vase With Fifteen Sunflowers sold for nearly $40 million. |
